💡 Did you know: The Ruth Bancroft Garden sits on what was once a 400-acre Bancroft fruit farm growing walnuts and Bartlett pears. In the 1930s it took first place in the state for pears eight years out of nine and shipped as far as England. The last walnut orchard came down in 1971, and Philip Bancroft Jr. handed the land to his wife Ruth, who planted succulents on it instead.
Sunday is the problem this week, in the best possible way. Joybound turns Broadway Plaza into a pet festival for four hours, and the Ruth Bancroft Garden throws its free Botanical Bash on the same afternoon, cactus petting zoo included. You will have to pick, or drive fast. Saturday makes you choose too: a free family movie in Civic Park, or 90s hip hop at a taproom on Pine. Wednesday has a band on Main Street, Monday belongs to the Garden Club, and Around Walnut Creek has an eight-story building headed for a downtown parking lot.

🐾 Joybound Takes Over Broadway Plaza
Joybound People & Pets runs its biggest community event of the year Sunday, and Broadway Plaza becomes a pet festival for four hours. Adoptable animals come in from shelters across Northern California. There are dog training demonstrations, face painting, children’s activities, games, prizes, pet vendors, and a best-dressed pet contest that people take more seriously than you would think.
The day opens with an easy one-mile pet walk around downtown before the festival proper gets going. Bring the dog, bring the kids, and go in knowing that the adoptable-animal section is a dangerous place for anyone with a soft spot and a spare room.

🍿 Movies Under the Stars Returns to Civic Park
Arts + Rec brings Movies Under the Stars back to Civic Park Saturday with the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, not the 2010 animation your kids already know by heart. Gates at six, savory and sweet food trucks on site so dinner is somebody else’s problem, and the film starts just after sundown.
Blankets, low chairs and beverages are all welcome. No animals and no high-back chairs; the city is specific about both.

🎤 90s Hip Hop Sing-Along at Rotator Taproom
Rotator Taproom on Pine runs its Sing-Along Night the same evening, and the customers picked the theme by vote: 90s hip hop. Three hours of a room full of adults who turn out to know every word to songs they have not thought about since middle school.
It is a warehouse space a few minutes’ walk from BART, with twenty-four rotating taps and wine for anyone not drinking beer. Dog friendly, if yours has better taste in music than you do.

🌵 Botanical Bash at the Ruth Bancroft Garden
The garden throws its annual Botanical Bash Sunday, a free drop-in day with vendors, food, educational groups, and crafts where kids paint using oak gall ink. There is a cactus petting zoo, which is exactly what it sounds like and is handled more carefully than you are imagining.
Three free talks run through the middle of the day, seating first come first served: succulents for the California garden at 10:30, designing a lush dry garden at 11:30, and low-fuss power plants for dry gardens at 12:30. One thing to know before you drive over: both RSVP sessions had filled by press time, though the garden still lists admission as free all day. Worth a quick call to confirm walk-ups.

🎸 Music on Main with KC’s Side Hustle
Downtown Stages brings Music on Main back Wednesday evening with KC’s Side Hustle at Cypress and Main. Free, family-friendly, and the only planning required is deciding which patio to eat on first.
If one weeknight out is not enough, Rooted Coffee Co on Locust runs its monthly themed bingo the following night, Thursday at 6:30, with prizes and Rooted treats.

🌱 The Garden Club Opens Its Season
The Walnut Creek Garden Club starts its new garden year Monday morning at the Elks Lodge with a program called Let’s Grow Together, built around garden questions designed to get people talking about what worked this year and what quietly did not. Registration opens at 9:15, there is a break at 10:15 with coffee and snacks, and the program follows.
Visitors are welcome, and you do not need to be a gardener to join. That last part is their emphasis, not ours.

🌳 Around Walnut Creek
🏙️ An eight-story building is coming to Mount Diablo Boulevard. The Planning Commission voted unanimously on August 27 to approve a 104-unit residential building with ground-floor retail at 1532 Mount Diablo Blvd., replacing a surface parking lot. At 89 feet it would be the tallest building in the city’s commercial corridor. Fourteen units are restricted as affordable, nine at very-low income and five at moderate. Commissioners named the tradeoffs out loud: height, reduced property buffers, and parking. The building has 49 below-ground spaces available to rent, none assigned to a unit. City newsroom
