Happy Tuesday, Walnut Creek!

💡 Did you know: Rossmoor was a cattle ranch first. In the 1930s Stanley Dollar built an estate in the Tice Creek Valley that grew to 2,200 acres, where his family raised Hereford cattle and show horses. His son sold it to developer Ross Cortese in 1960, and Rossmoor says the first homes opened in 1964. Today it is about 6,700 homes, and the nonprofit that runs it is called the Golden Rain Foundation, after the golden rain trees Cortese planted around the community.

Quiet week, and that is fine. The Bedford’s tufting show is open Wednesday through Sunday, Thursday gives you a golf simulator in a mattress store and stand-up in a bottle shop, and Ruth Bancroft is marking down its whole nursery. Consider it a breather after Oktoberfest.

We flagged this one when it opened, and now it’s ready for a proper visit. High Pile: Concepts in Tufting fills Bedford Gallery with colorful works made using a tufting gun—the tool behind those shaggy yarn rugs all over your feed—used here to create wall pieces and sculptures instead of floor coverings.

Regular gallery admission is pay what you can, and kids 12 and under are free. The exhibition is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to five, inside the Lesher Center, and runs through December 13.

Saatva, the mattress shop that took the old Sleep Number space on Mt. Diablo, throws its grand opening Thursday evening, and it is stranger than a ribbon cutting. The Bay Golf Club is rolling in a mobile golf simulator, there are wellness activations around the sleep collection, every guest leaves with something, and there is a raffle for signed Wyndham Clark merchandise. RSVP first.

If a mattress store grand opening isn’t your Thursday-night plan, ØL Beercafe & Bottle Shop on Giammona runs a monthly comedy night at 7:30, an hour of stand-up from local and traveling comedians, with tips in place of a cover.

The Ruth Bancroft Garden is running its fall nursery sale, and it is 30% off everything in the nursery. Sale Details

Bloom is a Saturday morning fair on the Broadway Plaza Event Plaza for new and expecting moms, with experts talking pregnancy, birth, postpartum, medical and dental care, infant care and sleep. Everyone who comes gets entries into giveaways for baby and mom products, and partners, caretakers and friends are welcome too.

General admission is free. VIP tickets are sold separately and include a swag bag, priority photo booth access and other perks.

🗳️ Measure W is on the November 3 ballot. Voters who live within the Acalanes Union High School District will decide on a proposed $168-per-parcel annual tax lasting eight years. The measure would provide about $6 million a year for AUHSD schools, including Las Lomas, with funding designated for teachers, academic programs, class sizes, library and counseling services, career education and other instructional needs. Danville’s downtown becomes a scarecrow gallery again this month. More than fifty downtown businesses decorate their storefronts, and you walk the route, spot the scarecrows and vote for your favorite display. The town says it runs October 1 through November 1, which is long enough to make it a weekend outing rather than a rush.

Fall into Danville

This week is the calm before a busy month. SFJAZZ brings Nicholas Payton to the Lesher on Thursday, October 8 at 7:30 PM. The HEAD WEST Marketplace lands on North Main Street on Sunday, October 11. Once Upon a Street returns to Broadway Plaza on Saturday, October 17 for the center’s 75th birthday, free from eleven to two. And Trunk or Treat takes over Civic Park on Friday, October 23 from three to six.

🥗 Weekly Walnut recipe: Maple Walnut Biscotti — two cups of chopped walnuts and a quarter cup of maple syrup, baked twice into about thirty biscotti, an hour and fifteen minutes start to finish.
