Happy Tuesday, Walnut Creek!
💡 Did you know: The building at 850 S. Broadway started out in 1891 as the Southern Pacific depot, one of four identical stations the railroad put up along the San Ramon branch that year. It outlasted all three of its siblings and stayed open until February 1972. When the tracks shifted east to make room for the South Broadway extension, a local property owner had the whole building lifted off its foundation and hauled down the road, where it has since been a restaurant, a steakhouse, and lately almost nothing at all.
Thursday is the one to plan around. The Ruth Bancroft Garden puts a one man Americana band on the lawn at 5:30, free, with tacos, a beer truck, and permission to bring your own chair. The rest of the week fills in around it: two trivia nights, ballet and comedy at the Lesher, a public art walk that only comes around twice a year, a Moana sing-along for the kids, and a quick trip through the tunnel for Lafayette’s biggest festival weekend.

🎶 Sunset Sessions Returns With a One Man Band
The Ruth Bancroft Garden brings Sunset Sessions back Thursday evening, and the booking is worth showing up early for. The Real John Gary is the one man project of Drew Clinard, who spent years living off the grid before he started recording under the name. He plays his own songs alongside Dylan, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and John Prine, and his third record came out in February.
Mi Casita is serving food, Headlands Brewing is pouring, and the plaza and music are free; garden admission is separate. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged. Outside food is welcome, outside alcohol is not. An RSVP is requested, and a hundred people had already claimed a spot by Monday.

🍻 Two Trivia Nights, Two Taprooms
The front half of the week belongs to bar trivia. Tuesday it is Head Games at Barebottle on South California, free to play, teams of up to six, with a games room full of pinball and shuffleboard for whoever gets knocked out early and needs somewhere to be.
Wednesday it moves to Rotator on Pine, where Geeks Who Drink runs seven rounds starting at 6:30. That quiz posts its own leaderboard every week, so you can see exactly what you would be walking into: last Wednesday a team called Yellow Horns took it with 76 points.

🎭 Ballet Friday, Comedy Saturday at the Lesher
The Lesher has two very different reasons to head downtown this weekend. Friday, Smuin Contemporary Ballet brings French Kiss to the Hofmann Theatre, including the return of a work the company hasn’t performed in a decade. Saturday night shifts gears with Best of San Francisco Stand-Up, a 75-minute comedy show in the smaller Vukasin Theatre.
The comedy ticket is the easier impulse buy at $18.75, while Smuin runs $25–$100 with $25 student seats available.

🖼 The Last Public Art Walk of the Year
Bedford Gallery runs docent led walking tours of the city’s public art on third Saturdays, and Route 2 is the one that covers Plaza Escuela, Locust Street and California Boulevard. This Saturday is the last time it runs in 2026. The next Route 2 tour after this one is in May 2027, so the scarcity is real rather than manufactured.
One hour, on foot, pay what you can. Reservations are suggested but not required, and same day tickets are available at the Lesher box office, which opens an hour beforehand. Wear shoes you can actually walk in.

🥕 A Free Saturday Morning in Shadelands
The Diablo Valley Farmers’ Market sets up Saturday mornings at Wiget and Mitchell, year round, and it is the easiest possible start to a Saturday before the day gets away from you.
Two blocks over at the Shadelands Art Center, the Center for Community Arts runs a free Preschool Art Pop-Up the same morning: hands on art and sensory stations for ages zero to five with a grown up attached. Between the two you can fill a whole morning out there without spending a dollar.

🌺 Moana, With the Lyrics On Screen
Sunday belongs to anyone with small people at home. The Lesher screens Moana twice with the lyrics on screen and the audience doing the singing, hosted live from the stage by a performer billed as Polynesian Princess Kalena, who opens with an island welcome and comes back to lead the big numbers.
About an hour and forty five minutes, no intermission. Two showtimes, which conveniently puts one on either side of a nap.

🌳 Around Walnut Creek
🏛️ The Ygnacio Valley library is closed until spring 2027. The branch shut its doors on September 9 for a full building overhaul: all electric HVAC, a new roof, upgraded electrical infrastructure and new lighting. It is scheduled to reopen around May 31, 2027. The book drop and the parking lot are closed for the duration, and holds waiting there have been moved to the Walnut Creek Library at 1644 N. Broadway. Clayton, Concord and Pleasant Hill are the other nearby branches. Contra Costa County Library
🍳 Sur la Table is coming back to Broadway Plaza. The cookware shop left the plaza at the end of March and is returning to the space P.F. Chang’s used to occupy, which happens to sit right next door to where it used to be. No opening date announced yet. Beyond the Creek
🏗️ Calicraft is building something permanent in Shadelands. The Walnut Creek brewery has been running a temporary beer garden at 2700 Mitchell Drive, and it is moving into the two story building standing directly in front of it. No timeline announced. WhatNow
🤸 Sky Zone is coming to The Orchards. The former Stein Mart space on Ygnacio Valley Road is being transformed into a new Sky Zone, with construction underway. Plans call for a large indoor active-entertainment space with trampolines, an arcade, dodgeball, a toddler area and party spaces. No opening date has been announced yet.
👋 Hello, Neighbor: Lafayette’s Biggest Weekend
A few miles down 24, the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival takes over downtown for two days with 200+ art and craft booths, food throughout the festival footprint, wine and beer, four stages of live entertainment and plenty for kids. It drew more than 65,000 people last year, so this is less neighborhood street fair and more full-weekend production.
Admission is free, and BART might be the easiest move: the festival is one block from Lafayette Station, with free parking and a shuttle available.

👀 Looking Ahead: Oktoberfest and a 75th Birthday
Two for the calendar. Downtown’s Oktoberfest takes over Civic Park East next weekend with German beer, bratwurst, live music, artisan vendors and a Kinder Karneval for the kids. It runs Friday evening and most of Saturday, and admission is free both days.
Then October 17 brings another big downtown date: Once Upon a Street returns to Broadway Plaza as part of the center’s 75th birthday celebration. More details are still to come, but that one is worth getting on the calendar now.
